Former Lusaka minister Bowman Lusambo has commended the minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Garry Nkombo over the removal of street vendors in the central business district, stating the decision was beyond partisan politics.
The former PF Kabushi member of Parliament called in during Hot FM's Red Hot Breakfast Radio programme that featured Nkombo this morning.
Lusambo supported the decision to remove street vendors from the CBD and drew attention to the dangers faced by vendors who had set up their businesses on busy roads, such as Industrial Road and Lumumba Road.
"Look at how that whole road has (had) been turned into a shop. And that's a heavy-duty road. Remember, a heavy-duty has a lot of trucks that go through there with cargo," Lusambo said.
Lusambo also highlighted the long-standing nature of the street vending issue, which he believed had been growing over the years.
He emphasized the need to view street vendors as small-scale entrepreneurs who should eventually transition into owning formal businesses.
Lusambo suggested that street vendors should be relocated to alternative marketplaces outside the CBD, ensuring both their safety and the smooth flow of traffic.
Meanwhile, Lusambo expressed his desire to protect public health and safety in Lusaka's CBD, as well as create an environment that would attract tourists and investors.
