Holiday accidents claims 27 people, Lusaka records highest number
27 people are reported to have lost their lives while 78 had near death experiences in road traffic accidents during the just ended four days holiday.
As business gets back to normal today after the completion of the long weekend which was characterised by different activities across the country, Zambia Police and the Road Transport and Safe Agency (RTSA) rather had their hands full, gathering car wreckages and dead bodies.
RTSA records have revealed that a total of 319 road traffic accidents, having Lusaka province recording the highest number of 106.
Out of the 319 incidents, 25 were recorded as fatal leaving 27 people dead while 42 were seriously injured in the accidents and 78 people not serious injured.
Zambia Police public relations officer Danny Mwale said Coppetbelt and Central provinces recorded 57 and 38 accidents respectively.
Mwale said that this year’s records in comparison to last year’s RTAs records represents an increase of 11 cases during the same period.
“During the same period in 2023, Police recorded 308 RTAs in which 18 were recorded as fatal were 28 people died while 41 were recorded as serious injury RTAs in which 109 people were seriously injured,” said Mwale
He added that a total of K694, 835.00 was collected as Admission of Guilt fine during this year’s long, representing an increase from K585, 300.00. in 2023.
Mwale attributed most of the RTAs recorded to low compliance levels by motorists and motorcyclists.
